If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men
liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering... James 1: 5,6
And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer;
and
while they are yet speaking, I will hear. Is. 65: 24
With these texts from the Holy Scripture in mind, we approach the awesome calling of providing guidance and direction to the students entrusted to us.
When we meet with students, we need to begin by discussing the importance of setting goals. How should we decide on our goals?
-
They should enable us to honor God
-
They should reflect our interests, natural talents, and values.
-
We should plan the steps necessary to accomplish our goals.
-
We should remind ourselves to be open to other options, realizing that
God may lead us to adjust or change our goals.
Once goals are set, the next thing the student needs to do is put a plan in place to achieve these goals. Several things are done in the Career Guidance Department to assist the student in this process.
There are group meetings with the different grade levels to discuss the general things pertinent to them, followed by individual appointments, where the conversations become personal and specific.
The sophomores highly utilize an online career guidance and planning tool called Career Cruising, which helps them identify interests and possible Career Paths to research. The juniors continue to use Career Cruising to help them further identify career paths, as well as colleges that offer programs in the field(s) in which they are interested. In addition, we have a Junior Checklist that the students can work through month by month to make sure they are accomplishing all necessary tasks. The seniors will continue to make use of Career Cruising by creating a resume and also researching available financial aid possibilities. We also have a comprehensive Senior Checklist that is used to make sure the students stay on track towards achieving the goals they have set and follow the path to which God has called them.
