Unit Summary
Mary Baker Eddy was born in 1821 and suffered from seizures or fits throughout her early life.
Later in life she abandoned her Christian upbringing and began dabbling in spiritualism, the occult, clairvoyance, and mesmerism.
P.P. Quimby was a "mental healer" who Eddy began putting stock in and following.
Two weeks after Quimby's death Eddy fell on the ice and was injured, shortly there after she claimed to not only have healed herself, but also to have received a revelation directly from God.
She settled in Massachusetts and began developing her practice of mental healing.
She continued to be plagued by poor health despite her claims of healing power. She blamed it on "Malicious Animal Magnetism" a form of occult black magic.
In 1875 Eddy wrote her book Science and Health with Keys to the Scripture, and formed the "Christian Scientists".
Eddy also wrote the Manual of the Mother Church, which outlines all the church practices of the Christian Science.
Christian Scientists view all pain and sickness as illusions, all things are really an illusion.
Eddy blatantly denies that Jesus is God, and distorts the Trinity as "love, peace, and light"
Christian Science attract followers through their reading rooms throughout the country.
