Unit Summary

The Church of Scientology organized as a church in 1954, only after the "psychology" seminars of its founder L.Ron Hubbard, began growing in popularity.

The popularity of his book, Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health launched Hubbard into a profession as a cult leader, and it soon became the "scripture" to his followers.

Hubbard claimed that "dianetics" could cure diseases, especially metal illnesses.

The purpose of dianetic therapy is to remove the content of the reactive engram bank (memories and thoughts that suppress humans limitless power and potential). In a release, the majority of emotional stress is deleted from this bank. In a clear(one who has successfully gone through the process of therapy), the entire content is removed.

Hubbard developed "E-meter" technology and explained how to audit thetans (people) in order to raise them to a higher spiritual level, (operating thetan).

The church of Scientology has been criticized much in the press for its authoritarian control of its members and has been accused of physical abuse and other deviant behavior in the courts.
