Unit Summary
William Miller could be labeled the forerunner of the Seventh-day Adventists even though he was not connected to the movement, it was his date setting of Christ's return in 1844, that gave rise to the Sanctuary theory and led to the Investigative Judgement teachings of the SDA.
Many of the doctrinal problems of the SDA resulted from this false prophesy and were reinforced through "inspired" prophesy of Ellen G. White.
The SDA relies on the "spirit of prophesy" that came through the visions of Ellen G. White, many of her visions had to do with health and diet code. Many of which are still enforced today.
Another distinctive feature of the SDA church is their practice of worshiping on Saturday. They also teach that all who do not eventually come around to Saturday worship are apostate.
The SDA was organized as a church in 1863 at a General Conference in Battle Creek, MI.
The teaching of investigative judgement denies the finished work of Christ on the cross by emphasizing his continuing atoning work.
Their teaching of "soul sleep" and their denial or eternal punishment are also unbiblical teachings.
